Modern life places constant demands on our nervous systems. Stress from work, relationships, injuries, life transitions, and daily responsibilities can accumulate in the body over time. Even when the stressful event has passed, the body often continues holding the tension.
TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a simple, body-based practice designed to help release deep patterns of stress and tension stored in the nervous system.
Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE uses a short sequence of gentle exercises that activate the body’s natural tremor response. These neurogenic tremors are a natural reflex that humans — and many animals — use to discharge stress after challenging or threatening experiences.
Rather than analyzing or reliving past events, TRE works directly with the body’s natural regulation system. When the tremor response is safely activated, the body begins to release held tension, allowing the nervous system to settle and restore balance.
Over time, many people report feeling calmer, more grounded, and better able to respond to stress.
How TRE Works
The body has an innate ability to regulate and recover from stress. However, modern life often interrupts the natural discharge process.
TRE gently reactivates this natural mechanism.
During a session, participants are guided through a series of simple exercises that fatigue specific muscle groups — particularly the legs and hips, where the body commonly stores protective tension. Once the body begins to tremor, participants lie on the floor and allow the tremors to continue naturally while learning how to regulate the experience.
The tremors are typically subtle and rhythmic. Some people experience small muscle vibrations, while others may notice larger shaking movements. Each experience is unique, and participants are always in control of the process.
TRE is not about forcing a release, but about allowing the body to unwind tension at its own pace.
Potential Benefits
People practice TRE for a wide range of reasons. Many participants report benefits such as:
• Reduced stress and tension
• Improved sleep
• Greater emotional resilience
• Relief from chronic muscular tightness
• Increased sense of calm and grounding
• Improved connection to the body
• Support for nervous system regulation
TRE is not a replacement for therapy or medical care, but it can be a valuable complementary practice for supporting overall wellbeing.
What to Expect in a Session
TRE sessions are typically about 60–75 minutes.
A guided session may include:
• A brief introduction to the nervous system and the tremor response
• A series of simple preparatory exercises
• Guided tremoring practice
• Options for regulating or stopping the tremor
• Time for integration and questions
Participants learn how to start and stop the tremor response so they can practice safely and confidently.
Most people can learn the technique in a single session and continue practicing on their own if they choose.
Who TRE Is For
TRE can be helpful for people who:
• Feel chronically stressed or overwhelmed
• Carry physical tension in the body
• Want to improve nervous system regulation
• Are curious about body-based approaches to wellbeing
• Are looking for a simple practice to support recovery and resilience
No prior experience with bodywork, meditation, or movement practices is required.
A Note on Safety
TRE is designed to be a gentle and accessible practice, but it is important to learn the technique from a trained provider. Some individuals with certain medical or psychological conditions may need additional guidance or modifications.
