An introduction to Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises and the body’s natural stress-release response
Everyone experiences stress. From everyday events to more severe trauma, vicarious trauma, generational trauma, and societal trauma, life continually places demands on our nervous system.
Most people try to manage stress through the mind. We push through it, analyze it, breathe through it, or distract ourselves from it. But stress doesn’t live only in our thoughts.
It lives in the body. Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, chronic tension in the hips and back, shallow breathing, and difficulty relaxing even when life slows down are all common signs of a nervous system that has been carrying more stress than it can comfortably process.
The body has natural ways of releasing this tension, but in modern life we rarely give it the opportunity. One of those natural mechanisms is tremoring.
What TRE Is
TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a simple sequence of movements designed to activate the body’s natural tremor response, also called neurogenic tremors.
TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli, who observed that people around the world naturally tremor after stressful or threatening experiences. Animals do this instinctively — shaking after danger passes in order to reset their nervous system.
Humans have the same built-in mechanism, but many of us have been conditioned to suppress it.
TRE provides a gentle and structured way to allow the body to access this natural release process safely.
How TRE Works
TRE exercises lightly stretch and fatigue the muscles of the legs and hips, encouraging the body to begin a natural tremoring response.
The tremors typically begin in the legs or hips, often around the psoas muscle, a deep muscle closely connected to the body’s fight-or-flight response.
Once the tremors begin, the body leads the process. The movement may stay small and subtle, or it may move through different areas of the body. Some sessions are quiet and minimal, while others involve more noticeable shaking. Both are normal.
The goal of TRE is not to force a release, but to create the conditions where the body can release tension at its own pace.
TRE With ACECoLab
At ACE CoLab, much of our work centers on the relationship between challenge, experience, and personal growth. Whether through adventure, coaching, or somatic practices, the goal is to help people develop greater awareness, resilience, and connection to themselves and the world around them.
Practices like TRE support this process by helping the body recover from stress, process experience, and return to a more regulated state. When the nervous system is balanced, we are better able to meet life with clarity, resilience, and presence.
