There’s a well known saying, “Travel is the one thing you can buy that makes you richer.” While it may sound cliché, I believe there is a profound truth hidden within it.
The richness that travel offers has very little to do with luxury hotels, first-class flights, or checking destinations off a bucket list. The real value of travel lies in what it teaches us about ourselves, the world, and our place within it. Travel changes us.
It stretches us beyond the familiar and invites us into experiences we cannot fully predict or control. It asks us to navigate uncertainty, adapt to new environments, communicate in new ways, figure out differences, go with the flow, and remain open to perspectives that challenge our assumptions. In many ways, travel is one of the greatest personal development practices available.
When we leave our routines behind, we also leave behind many of the identities and expectations that shape our daily lives. We step into situations where we become beginners again. We don’t know where everything is. We may not speak the language. We may not understand the customs. We are forced to pay attention. And in that space of awareness, growth becomes possible.
When we travel, we are often more engaged with the world around us. We notice details we might otherwise overlook. We slow down enough to experience life rather than simply moving through it. We become students again, learning from landscapes, cultures, communities, and conversations, reminding us how connected we all are.
Travel also has a unique way of helping us reconnect with ourselves. Travel teaches resilience. It teaches flexibility. It teaches gratitude. It teaches presence. Sometimes we travel to discover something new. Sometimes we travel to remember something we’ve forgotten. A sense of wonder. A spirit of adventure. A deeper connection to nature. A version of ourselves that feels more alive, curious, and engaged.
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Peru with my mom to attend a yoga retreat hosted by a friend. It wasn’t just a chance to explore a new country—it was an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, share meaningful time together, and immerse ourselves in a different culture. The memories we created, the people we met, and the perspectives we gained will stay with me far longer than any souvenir or photograph ever could. That’s the kind of wealth travel offers: new perspectives, stronger relationships, and a deeper understanding of what matters most. No bank account can measure that kind of richness.
The older I get, the less interested I become in accumulating things or achieving objectives and the more interested I become in collecting experiences. Experiences shape who we are. They become stories, lessons, memories, and connections that continue to enrich our lives long after the trip has ended.
At ACE CoLab, we believe adventure can be a catalyst for growth. Whether it’s traveling to a new country, exploring a mountain range, joining a retreat, participating in a coaching experience, or simply stepping outside your comfort zone, the goal is not just to see new places. The goal is to become more fully engaged with life itself. Travel reminds us that the world is bigger than our routines, our responsibilities, and our worries. It reminds us that there is still so much to learn, experience, and explore. And perhaps that’s what makes it such a worthwhile investment. Not because of where it takes us. But because of who it helps us become.
ACE Journeys creates travel experiences designed to foster adventure, connection, and growth around the world. Our upcoming ski experiences in Chile are about far more than skiing incredible mountains. They are opportunities to challenge yourself, connect with others, immerse yourself in a new culture, and discover what becomes possible when you step beyond the familiar. The destination is only part of the experience. Often, the greatest discoveries happen within ourselves along the way.
